Rough waters delay catch as crab season begins

SAN FRANCISCO

The first haul arrived at Fisherman's Wharf Friday night. But rough seas kept most crabbers from heading out in their boats. High winds are expected to keep many of them docked until Saturday night.

The good news for crab lovers is that sport fishermen who started the recreational season two weeks earlier say this year's catch is looking robust.

New regulations cap the number of traps a boater can set at 500. It's intended to give smaller operators a chance to compete with larger boats for the chance of a good haul.

Fishermen are expecting $3 a pound for their catch.

That means you'll likely pay $5.50 to $6.50 per pound at local retailers.
