Deputy saves man after crash in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif.

The deputy tried to pull the man over on 98th Avenue when the driver took off and lost control at a gas station on Edes Avenue. His SUV knocked over two pumps causing a fire.

"At that point, the driver couldn't get out of his car, so our deputy had to extract the driver from this car, which is kind of the irony of the situation -- here's a guy where they are trying to figure out what is going on and they end up saving him," said Alameda County Sheriff's Dept. Sgt. J.D. Nelson.

The gas station is located next to an apartment complex that was temporarily evacuated. Crews are continuing to monitor for any signs of a gas leak in the area.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, possibly with a broken leg. He has been charged with DUI.
