Officials report six more flu deaths throughout Bay Area

Six more deaths were confirmed on Wednesday.

Three were in Contra Costa County. San Mateo, Sonoma and San Francisco Counties also reported one additional death each.

That brings the total number of flu-related deaths in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz Counties to 29 this flu season.

This year's outbreak is similar the one we had in a few years ago, but it's not as severe yet.

"A flu can affect all age ranges this year. The predominant strain is H1N1 and that was the same strain that was in 2009 when there was a pandemic, and we saw a similar pattern at that time as well, so it's not an exact surprise," said Naveena Bobba, from the Department of Public Health.

Public health officials say this year's outbreak has not reached pandemic status and you can still be protected if you get a flu shot.
