SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Caltrans says taxpayers won't foot any of the bill to fix a broken, $4 million elevator on the Bay Bridge.

The elevator failed after it was used only a few times.

Bridge officials say the elevator is under warranty and the contractor will pay for repairs.

The elevator earlier is intended to take maintenance workers to the top of the new Bay Bridge's eastern span.

Until it can be fixed, bridge workers must climb the tower using ropes and cables.
