'Bearded bandit' appears in court

BRENTWOOD, Calif. (KGO) -- The so-called bearded bandit was in federal court Thursday morning.

Sketches from inside the courtroom show 30-year-old Kenneth Ellis and he apparently got emotional.

The case was continued until April 18. Ellis previously confessed to robbing 11 banks across Northern California, including some in the Bay Area.

Police say he told them he used the money to pay his bills and his motive was extreme financial difficulty.
