MARTINEZ, Calif. (KGO) -- Election officials are trying to keep things moving and keep voters happy in the East Bay on Tuesday.

It doesn't get any easier than in Martinez - voters can drop off their ballots without even getting out of the car.

"I think it is the way to go. I used to have to park and trying to find parking in there is crazy, when you are trying to vote. This is great," Concord resident Maureen Riggs said.

One voter liked the drive-thru voting so much that she brought donuts to thank the workers sitting out there. But election officials say they really did this out of a need to help themselves.

"We have a lot of foot traffic that traditionally comes into the office, clogs the parking lot, clogs other business going on in the office," Asst. Registrar of Voters Scott Konopasek said.

So the idea of drive-thru voting was born. It's especially nice for those who really don't want to be here this year.

"I just want it to be over. That's for sure. But I think it is still important to come out and put our vote in," Oakley resident Isela Olveda said.

That sentiment is why Contra Costa officials don't think the turnout will be as high as it was in 2008, the last time we didn't have a sitting president.

Voting by mail is way up and the drive-thru in Alhambra is a big hit, but there is still the walk through option for those who like the old fashioned experience.
