Danville police identify suspect, victim in fatal shooting

DANVILLE, Calif. (KGO) -- Danville police are staying mostly tight-lipped about the murder of a 76-year-old resident Sunday afternoon. John Moore was shot and killed outside the office building he owned on Fostoria Way.

"He was just a great guy, a big figure," said Patti Rinetti, Moore's sister-in-law, "Always happy, always there to help. "

Danville Police Chief Allan Shields would not reveal many details but assured the community that there is no risk to public safety.

"Danville is a safe city, a safe place to live and we want to reaffirm that," said Shields.

Moore was a longtime Danville resident and businessman. He is survived by his wife and three grown children.

Shields said there are surveillance cameras in the area and detectives would be reviewing any footage for potential leads. So far, Danville police are not releasing any vehicle or suspect descriptions.

Police have identified a suspect in the shooting near the Iron Horse Regional Trail. Officials say they're searching for 51-year-old Mark Allan Sypien.

An arrest warrant on suspicion of murder has been issued for Sypien, police Chief Allan Shields said in a news release. Sypien is described as a white man who is 5 feet 9 and 185 pounds, with gray hair and green eyes. His last known address is in the Dublin area.

Sypien was last seen driving a 2003 silver Ford Escape with Illinois license plate 1008122.

Police ask anyone who sees Sypien to contact police immediately.

The doctors at Crow Canyon Medical Center sent ABC7 a photo of the victim and the following statement:

It was John's vision, intelligence, drive, and endless energy that brought to fruition this medical campus to serve the community that he lived in and cared so deeply about when we brought him out of retirement nearly 10 years ago. He served his fellow community members in so many capacities including the Danville Rotary, Crow Canyon Country Club, as well as the Governing Board of San Ramon Regional Medical Center to name a few. As he did with CCMC, his efforts on each and every one of these endeavors left them all a far better place. While we can never fill his shoes, his CCMC partners plan to honor his legacy and make sure that his vision lives on and thrives with the same energy and enthusiasm that John would of done and continue to keep CCMC the preeminent medical campus in our community. We will honor John's legacy with a candlelight vigil this Thursday February 28th at the CCMC campus at 6pm."
