Police: Records show suspect in slaying of Oakland teen had more targets
Oakland police say the man accused of slaying of 14-year-old Davon Ellis wanted to kill others people.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- One Oakland community was stunned when a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed by a total unknown last February.

Police say the man behind this senseless killing was charged with murder. The teen, Davon Ellis wasn't the only target. As records indicate, the shooter, 28-year-old Donald Higgins wanted to kill others.

The teenager's father says he beleives the shooter was mad about something, mad about the world.

A March 1 shootout between a suspect and Hayward police provided evidence to link 28-year-old Donald Higgins to the murder of 14-year-old Davon Ellis several miles away in Oakland.

"I'm happy, I'm happy. Finally some justice dealing my son's murder," said Christopher Ellis, Davon Ellis' father.

Ellis was in court Wednesday as Higgins was charged with several counts of murder and attempted murder. One day after his son's death, the alleged gunman barricaded himself inside his mother's home in Hayward after police spotted him in a white 2004 Infiniti SUV.

"When the officer attempted to stop him, he jumped out of the car and shots were fired between the suspect and the officers," said Hayward police Sgt. Ryan Cantrell.

His SUV matched the description given earlier by five other victims at California State University East Bay. Police say several hours after Higgins killed the 14-year-old he shot several times at their car. They were not hurt.

"I'm hurt because I basically lost my son for nothing, because someone else had a fit of rage I lost the most important person to me," Ellis said.

After the shootout, police found a handgun with a 30-round magazine. According to the report, the bullets matched casings recovered at the Hayward shooting scene. Police say they have evidence and statements that connect Higgins to the murder of the 14-year-old.

Davon attended Oakland Tech. A school district spokesperson described him as a promising student and football player.

"At his age, you're just beginning to paint a picture of what you'll be so who knows what he could have become and that's tragedy," Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said. "He'll never have the ability to achieve that potential."
