WAYNE, New Jersey (KGO) -- A man in Wayne, New Jersey says his sign warning drivers to slow down, or else, has paid off.

Father of three Craig Rovere says speeding became such big problem is his neighborhood, he posted a sign that read, "Warning: if you hit one of these kids because you are speeding, you will not need a lawyer."

A picture of a gun loomed large on the bottom.

"Guns exist, guns kill people, but so do cars," Rovere said. "It's kind of a hot button issue and that was the idea -- I needed something; just a sign that said 'slow down,' that doesn't work."

Rovere says he never planned to shoot anyone; his aim was to send a message with some shock value.

He claims it worked. Drivers have slowed down -- so he has removed the sign.
