Golden Eagle released back into wild after months of treatment

A young golden eagle is now back in the wild after spending the past eight months receiving medical care.

The eagle underwent treatment for a severe mite infestation that left her feather-less, weak and in poor health.

Friday, the researchers who helped the eagle recover released her into her natural habitat in the Las Trampas Regional Wilderness near San Ramon.

The golden eagle will wear a small backpack that contains a GPS locator so researchers can keep track of her recovery back in the wild. The backpack will fall off in a few months' time.

Researchers have affectionately named the golden eagle, Mitey Mite.
