SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The Golden Gate Bridge District Board has voted to approve a one-time closure of northbound lanes on the bridge for the San Francisco Marathon due to concerns about a possible terror attack.

The idea follows recent attacks by people who drove vehicles into large crowds of people.

During previous races, the bridge left one northbound lane open and allowed traffic on southbound lanes.

"In the past, northbound traffic has been allowed to proceed with traffic cones," said Priya Clemens, spokesperson for the Golden Gate Bridge District. "And considering world events, we don't think that's the safest way to go about this activity."

Under the plan, the lanes will be closed from 6 to 9 a.m. Sunday, July 23.
