LIVERMORE, Calif. (KGO) -- Nearly a half-million lights shined for the first time this holiday season in Livermore Friday night.

People sang Christmas carols as they walked along Hillcrest Avenue.

Their journey took them to the home of Deacon Dave Rezendes of Saint Michael's Catholic Church.

Rezendes started his holiday light tradition in the early 1980's. "I wanted to do something for people of all faiths and also to exemplify the light of Christ, the light of creation," he said.

"The way that he can produce something like this every year is for me nothing short of a miracle," Livermore Mayor John Marchand said.

At least 403,000 bulbs were turned on, so PG&E installed an industrial strength transformer on that block.

Rezendes started building this year's display on Labor Day weekend.
