Role of California in 2024 presidential race

California was given an important role on Day 2 of DNC, and leaders from the Bay Area have been at the forefront of the conversation in this race.

California was given an important role on Day 2 of DNC, and leaders from the Bay Area have been at the forefront of the conversation in this race.

ABC7 News Insider Phil Matier talked about the significance of so many California power-players in the spotlight.

"What we have here is a situation and a rollercoaster that we've never seen before. We have a candidate from California from San Francisco - Kamala Harris. We have a Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi who engineered or helped engineer Joe Biden's exit to Kamala Harris. And we have Gavin Newsom a rising star who's going to take the California delegation and put it over the top with Kamala Harris, somebody who he has been in a sibling competition with sort of for more than 20 years. And so there's a lot of drama going on on the floor and behind the stage," Matier said.

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi is set to speak as part of Wednesday night's program.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr returns to Chicago Bulls arena to speak at DNC

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr got a standing ovation when he walked on stage, just over a week after he coached the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team won gold.

Golden State Warriors and Team USA coach Steve Kerr received arguably the second loudest applause of the night Monday, behind Harris, when he appeared on the convention stage.

Kerr returned to the United Center where nearly 30 years ago he made the winning shot to clinch the Chicago Bulls another championship. "As you know, a lot of good stuff has happened in this building, especially in the '90s," Kerr told conventiongoers.

Harris is from Oakland, California, where the Warriors played for decades until moving their arena to San Francisco.

Kerr finished his speech saying, "After the votes are tallied, in the words of the great Steph Curry, we can tell Donald Trump ... night night!" as he made Curry's signature gesture.
