Apparent tornado touches down in Scotts Valley, officials say

Several people were injured and "extensive" property damage was reported by city officials in Scotts Valley on Saturday after an apparent tornado hit the area during a localized thunderstorm.

The National Weather Service was sending a team to the area to confirm if the event was a tornado, as indicated by radar and local reports and video.

The unconfirmed tornado came hours after the National Weather Service issued an unprecedented tornado warning earlier Saturday morning for San Francisco, but that was canceled after the rotational winds that caused the warning moved past the city.

Winter storm dumps several inches of snow in Sierra Nevada

The same system that spawned a tornado warning in San Francisco and toppled trees across the Bay Area is now dumping snow up in the Sierra Nevada.

Footage posted to X by UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab shows snow piled up at their base in Soda Springs.

"Believe it or not, it was during a period of better conditions," the lab wrote, adding they were expecting up to 20 more inches of snow in the next 24 hours.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the region until Saturday night.
