DALY CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- One person was killed after leading police on a pursuit from Daly City to Brisbane late Sunday morning.

The police chase prompted officials to shut down a busy roadway.

It started in Daly City on Geneva Avenue just before 11 a.m. and ended with a crash at Bayshore Boulevard near Industrial Way in Brisbane.

Bayshore Boulevard is finally back open. This stretch near Industrial Way was closed to traffic for almost six hours, while investigators combed through the scene of the deadly collision.

The suspect vehicle was towed away around 5 p.m.

A Daly City police officer tried to get the driver to pull over as the vehicle was traveling on Geneva Avenue, but the driver would not stop and instead took off down Bayshore Boulevard.

Police chased the car and the short pursuit ended when the driver lost control and veered off the road near Industrial Boulevard in Brisbane.

The car plunged down an embankment and hit several trees and a building. There are still deep tire tracks in the mud.

Police say the driver was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Daly City police and the California Highway Patrol are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

ABC7 News spoke with an officer earlier who says he does not know why the driver fled.

The person's name has not been released because family members are still being notified of the death.
