Oakland Unified School District announced Wednesday that Kyla Johnson-Trammell is the finalist for the permanent superintendent position.
She is currently serving as interim deputy superintendent at the district and will start as superintendent July 1.
The East Oakland native is a third generation Oaklander and a fierce advocate for the Oakland public schools. Trammell has a degree in communications from the University of Pennsylvania and earned her EdD from U.C. Berkeley in educational leadership.
"I am honored by this opportunity to guide such an important organization in my hometown. To lead the teachers and staff of OUSD has been a dream of mine since I first stepped into a classroom as a professional," said Johnson-Trammell. "I am excited by the progress our District has made and look forward to tackling the challenges that lie ahead."
