REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- An off-duty CHP officer is being hailed as a hero for saving a 5-year-old boy.

Officer Art Montiel was at a grocery store in Redwood City when he saw Miguel Alvarez choking on a grape. Officer Montiel followed his medical training and was able to get Miguel to spit it up.

If Officer Montiel looks familiar, it's because he is a CHP spokesman who often does interviews with ABC7 News.

The CHP says it's proud of Officer Montiel and thankful Miguel is okay.
