SF police chief holding town hall to discuss officer-involved shooting

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco police Chief Greg Suhr will host a town hall meeting on Monday evening to discuss the events that led up to police shooting an armed man and arresting four others in the Potrero Hill neighborhood on Thursday night.

The meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House at 953 De Haro St., is intended to allow police and the community to discuss the officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 900 block of Connecticut Street at about 7:50 p.m. on Thursday, police said.

According to San Francisco police Sgt. Monica MacDonald, plainclothes officers were on violence suppression detail at the housing projects on Connecticut Street when a group of five males were seen acting suspiciously.

Two officers exited their vehicle to get a better view of the suspects before the group split up, MacDonald said.

One officer followed four of the suspects while another officer followed a fifth suspect, according to MacDonald.

The lone suspect turned on the officer trailing him and produced a handgun, causing the officer to draw his firearm. The officer ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, but the suspect did not comply and proceeded to advance on the officer, according to MacDonald.

The officer shot the suspect once in the upper body, and the suspect was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, MacDonald said.

The injured suspect had suspected narcotics in his possession, and his firearm is believed to be a loaded .38 caliber.

The four other suspects, one of whom also had suspected narcotics in his possession, were detained, MacDonald said.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy, according to MacDonald.
