SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- Police are investigating a shooting death on Interstate Highway 880 in San Leandro that happened early Saturday morning.
Officers with the San Leandro Police Department responded at 12:55 a.m. to assist the California Highway Patrol on a report of a multi-vehicle crash on the highway near Marina Boulevard.
After arriving, the CHP assumed the investigation of the crash, and the San Leandro officers left the scene, police said.
At 2:10 a.m., CHP officers still at the scene heard gunshots fired north of their location near the Marina Boulevard off-ramp.
"They did see a car pulled over to the right hand shoulder, just north of the Marina boulevard overcrossing. That's when they drove up to find this person who had been shot. Rest assured, this is not an incident of a freeway sniper," San Leandro Police Lt. Robert McManus said.
When they reached the vehicle, the officers located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound, police said.
The victim was reported deceased at the scene. The incident is being investigated as a homicide.
No other information about the investigation was immediately available.
The incident closed northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 880 at Marina Boulevard from 2 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.
The highway has since been reopened.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call San Leandro police at (510) 577-3230.
