SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- As the calendar turned to July 1st, the tax on tobacco products in California went up-which means the price you pay also went up.
Beginning Saturday, tax rates on tobacco products other than cigarettes are going up almost 40 percent, more than double the current amount.

The hike is dictated by Prop 56, which was passed last November.
Taxes rose from 27 to 65 percent on items like smokeless tobacco, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff, and e-cigarettes. The taxes increased for cigarettes in April.
