San Francisco mayor launches program that puts homeless people to work

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee helped launched a new program Tuesday that puts homeless and people-at-risk of becoming homeless to work on beautification projects and street cleaning.

In exchange, Downtown Streets Team members are given access to a myriad of services.

"They put you in housing, give you permanent jobs, help you with your license, getting your record expunged, doing all kinds of things. Right now, they're helping me get my license, it's the first time I've ever had it, so I'm excited about that," Keeaira Wells said.

Organizers said the program challenges team members to take an active role in their own recovery, and empowers them to create long-term solutions for their peers.
