San Jose uses outdated ballot counting equipment

SAN JOSE (KGO) -- Santa Clara County, which is of course the center of all things high-tech has one of the oldest vote counting systems in the state.

Most surrounding counties have what's called precinct voting, which allows votes to be tabulated almost immediately after its cast, and a memory card is then taken to the Registrar of Voters. But in this county things are still done the old fashioned way.

"We open and flatten ballots to get them through the scanning machines and that's happening all night and all week," Shannon Bushey, a spokesperson for the Santa Clara Registrar of Voters, said.

Replacing the antiquated counting system would cost the county $17 to $20 million.
