SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KGO) -- Police say 20-year-old Christopher German preyed on kids within feet of their parents. He's under arrest after being caught on camera. He was identified a day after ABC7 News aired surveillance video of him leaving the stores where the alleged groping incidents happened.
German is still locked up unable to make bail. His fiance, who spoke to ABC7 News, says he went to the Walmart on Hesperian Boulevard to buy her a birthday gift. However, police say German was at Walmart sexually assaulting a young girl and his urge was so uncontrollable he went down to the Target and did the same thing.
"Kind of surprised me because I got a little brother, you know. It kind of bothers me a little bit," Saul Martinez, the suspect's neighbor, said.
"Knowing he has a kid too, it just is disturbing, you know what I mean?" neighbor Willie Lesh said.
"He wanted to go to the police academy and he wanted to become a cop," Katelyn Wright, the suspect's fiance, said.
Wright is equally as shocked as her neighbors. The only difference is she's the fiance of German who's now in jail charged with two counts of lewd acts with children.
"He didn't tell me if he did it or not. He just said he's sorry that he's putting me through this," Wright said.
Police say they have a strong case that proves German groped a young girl at a San Leandro Walmart. Less than 30 minutes later, he was seen entering the Bayfair Target where police say he groped another girl under 10 years of age.
Wright says she spoke with one girl's mother at Friday's arraignment where German's bail was set at $200,000. She said, "I just cried and told her I was so sorry, and that I don't know what happened or why it happened."
Wright says the couple and their 1-year-old son moved from Southern California to live with Wright's grandmother in San Leandro, less than a block from Jefferson Elementary School.
"I feel like he's somebody that I don't know. I feel ashamed that he's done this or possibly did this. I feel scared. I feel embarrassed for my son," Wright said.
Now wright fears her dreams of starting a family have been crushed.
