Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano relives Super Bowl 26 halftime show
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Katy Perry last year, Coldplay and Beyonce this year -- Super Bowl halftime shows seem to try and outdo the one before. That wasn't always the case; one year in particular was a turning point and it starred a Bay Area gold medalist -- who still doesn't want to watch it 24 years later.

Brian Boitano was once a Super Bowl headliner: in 1992, Super Bowl 26 in Minneapolis featured a Winter Olympics theme -- Boitano and Dorothy Hamil skated on platforms topped with fake ice: glycerin-sprayed plastic.
"My friends don't even know, and then I say 'I was in the Super Bowl halftime show' and they say 'really?' And then they look it up on YouTube and they say 'oh my god this is hilarious,'" said Boitano.

Some see Super Bowl 26 as the moment the NFL had an entertainment change of heart. The NFL hasn't looked back since, so when see those big names at Super Bowl 50, you know who to thank.
"And it's because of you Brian Boitano, that we got Beyonce eventually," said ABC7's Reggie Aqui.

"That's awesome. I will take credit for that, it was all part of the master plan," joked Boitano.
Brian Boitano lives in San Francisco and still trains at the Yerba Buena Ice Skating Center. Since 1992, he hasn't watched any Super Bowl halftime show, including his. He has no idea who 'left shark' is.
