Caltrans predicts less traffic issues during San Mateo Bridge closure
Caltrans is predicting this weekend's closure of the San Mateo Bridge will not create the same traffic mess as the last time the bridge was closed.

HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) -- Caltrans is predicting this weekend's closure of the San Mateo Bridge will not create the same traffic mess as the last time the bridge was closed.

They even have a few tips for drivers based on what they learned from the last closure two weeks ago.

The San Mateo Bridge will close starting Friday at 10:00 p.m.

But Caltrans officials are more optimistic this time around.

First, they think a lot people will be out of town, which means less people will be on the Bay Area freeways.

"Traffic is still going to be heavy, but not as bad as last time," said Tom Gough, a local resident.

"We are going to a wedding," said Annie Yip, which means she is planning to leave much earlier to factor in the bridge closure.

Caltrans recommends drivers consider going further north or south for their detour.

"The Bay Bridge and the Dumbarton Bridge were heavily used, but some southern routes through San Jose and Mountain View were free flowing. So there's more capacity down there," explained Bob Haus with Caltrans.

Finally, the San Francisco Giants are not playing at home this weekend, which may mean fewer drivers will be out on the roads.

This is the second maintenance closure for the bridge in three weeks. Crews will be resurfacing the bridge - the first time they are doing so in 48 years.

The bridge is expected to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.
