1 in 4 girls got Gardasil in first year

The government reports that about one in four teenage girls chose to get the groundbreaking vaccine designed to prevent cervical cancer.

The Gardasil vaccine targets the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus.

Vaccine proponents hoped for a higher rate, saying the shots dramatically reduce cervical cancer deaths.

The survey, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was drawn from data collected in 2007, the first full year of the vaccine's availibility.

Health officials reccommend girls get the shot before becoming sexually active.
