Morteza Negahi is an author and a journalist. He is keeping in touch by phone and over the internet.

He says people in Tehran are optimistic, but are getting mixed signals from the government.

"In one hand the government shows kind of a tolerance you don't have tanks in the streets, we don't have curfew yet, and yet the attack protesters, plain clothes people, they come and attack them," Negahi said.

But communicating is not easy; Negahi says the government has been shutting down cell service after business hours in Tehran.
