Silas Byers postponed entering a plea for the murder of 49-year-old Douglas Johnson, of San Francisco, and is scheduled to return to court Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Sheriff's Department and the district attorney's office.

Johnson was in the passenger seat of a car parked in the 1600 block of La Salle Avenue at about 12:50 a.m. when he stepped out to speak with another man, according to police. The man then stabbed Johnson in the chest and fled.

Police have said there were witnesses to the killing, but they have not discussed a possible motive in the case.

Byers, who has given authorities various dates of birth that put him at either 43 or 44 years of age, remains in custody in lieu of $2 million bail.
