District signs nation's largest solar school contract

San-Jose based SunPower corporation will design, install and maintain solar power systems at 51 of the district's schools. The plan is expected to save the district $192 million over the 30-year life of the systems.

"It's going to provide 80-90 percent of the power for each school site, so it's almost reducing their electric bill to zero," SunPower Managing Director Bill Kelly said.

Construction will start next spring. The solar power systems are expected to be in place by 2012.
