The San Francisco Police Department made several promotions on Monday, laying a foundation for leadership from within its own ranks. The ceremony at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center on 19th Street was sprinkled with family members and fellow police officers. Promotions were made to the rank of sergeant, lieutenant, captain, commander and deputy chief.

"We're an international city, we're a historical police department, and there will be at some point in time a changing of the guard, if you will. This is an installation into the future of San Francisco and the future of the San Francisco Police Department. And I believe we have a fabulous group today that was just promoted," said Police Chief Greg Suhr.

Suhr added that while the promotions could have been done privately. It's important the officers get the proper recognition from the public as well.
