An Alameda County sheriff's deputy had to rescue the prisoners she was guarding Friday when their bus caught fire.

It happened on Interstate 580 in Castro Valley. The bus was carrying 22 prisoners back to the Santa Rita Jail from court appearances in Oakland when the driver smelled smoke and pulled over. The deputy helped evacuate the burning bus, returning four times to make sure everyone was accounted for before firefighters arrived.

She was treated for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
