Officials celebrate Doyle Drive demolition success

SAN FRANCISCO

Phase one of the Presidio Parkway project is now complete. A fleet of 300 workers and 40 excavators demolished 151 bridge spans and 307 columns in just 57 hours.

Mayor Ed Lee says he's excited about the project that is going to open up the Presidio.

"This feels exactly like I felt when the Embarcadero freeway went down, when the Octavia ramps went down; the community opened up, we knew we were trying to do the right things, we knew we were trying to make things seismically safe," Lee said.

Cleaning up the debris from the demolition is expected to take two months.

The next major step in the parkway project will begin in the fall. The entire roadway is expected to be complete in 2015.
