Nearly 8,000 homeowners in San Mateo and Foster City will no longer have to buy flood insurance, thanks the improvement of a levee that protects their properties.

This comes after a local flood control district helped raised $7.5 million to upgrade levees and flood walls.

Work on the project finished in March, ahead of schedule and under budget.

The work became necessary more than a decade ago when FEMA re-classified some areas of San Mateo County as being in special flood zones.
