Male fires shots at sheriff's deputy, gets away

MONTEREY, Calif.

At about 2 a.m., a sheriff's deputy attempted to contact a male walking on Teague Avenue in unincorporated Monterey County, the sheriff's office said.

The male, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, fled on foot when he saw the deputy. When the deputy pursued, the male fired two shots from his handgun, according to the sheriff's office.

With the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, and Greenfield and Soledad police, the sheriff's office set up a perimeter to conduct a search, but could not find the suspect, sheriff's officials said.

The case is ongoing.
