Antonio Lopez Guzman, 38, was shot to death by SJSU police Sgt. Mike Santos near Eighth and San Salvador streets, a short distance from the college campus, according to San Jose police.
The medical examiner's office, which released Lopez Guzman's identity on Wednesday, determined his death resulted from two bullet wounds in the back, an employee with the office said.
San Jose police are investigating the officer-involved fatal shooting, which occurred after SJSU police were called at about 10:55 a.m. Friday on a report of a man waving a knife and acting strange on the campus, police said.
Santos and a second officer drove to the scene and noticed Lopez Guzman holding a knife on Eighth Street south of San Salvador, according to police.
After Lopez Guzman refused the officers' demands that he drop the knife, the other officer used his Taser stun gun to subdue the man but it had no effect on him, police said.
When Lopez Guzman advanced with the knife toward the other officer, Santos shot the suspect, police said.
The wounded man was later pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.
Lopez Guzman had been carrying a foot-long saw blade that is similar to a jagged-edge tool used for cutting drywall, police said.
