49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick receives death threats over national anthem protest

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been vocal about police shootings, with his recent kneeling during the national anthem.

That protest has earned his national attention, but now he's receiving death threats.

Kaepernick said the threats have come via a couple different avenues.

A personal security expert said this is now bigger than Kaepernick and he needs to consider the safety of his teammates and fans.

During a locker room interview with a reporter from the Bay Area News Group, Kaepernick acknowledged he's been receiving death threats.

"I've had a few come my way, but I'm not too concerned about it," Kaepernick said.

Chuck Mauldin is with Urban Tactical Group, a specialized security company in San Jose. He says that's the wrong attitude.

"When you're a public figure you have to take everything seriously," Mauldin said.

Kaepernick also said he did not tell 49ers' management about the threats. Mauldin says that too is a mistake, especially given that a fan made it onto the field during last Monday's game.

"This has become a larger issue than just him and his personal statement. He needs to be concerned about his teammates, as well as the fans at the game," Mauldin said.

Like the protest itself, the death threats are evoking mixed reactions.

"Those who are sending death threats should reevaluate and look inside and look objectively at why he's doing what he's doing," said Boston resident George Odero.

"Don't feel that he should be killed, but I know several people that would have that same thought," said 49ers fan Gregory Sgarlato.

In the interview, Kaepernick went on to say that if he were killed it would prove his point and move the movement forward.
