Fire officials say a fire at the Marin Rod & Gun Club Monday night was reported by an off-duty Novato police officer.
The flames on the nearly half-a-mile long pier were confined to the end of the structure.
A fire boat arrived about 30 minute after the fire was reported and extinguished the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but a fire official says it may have been started when someone discarded a cigarette on the planks.
Damage to the pier was limited to the deck and part of the undercarriage.
