Toddler falls out of third-story window

UNION CITY, CA

Police officers were called around 9:15 p.m. to the Veranda apartments on reports that the girl had fallen from an open third-story window, police said.

The mother was on her way to the hospital when she flagged down fire officials, who immediately began treating the girl. The toddler, suffering from a fractured wrist and bloody lip, was taken to the Children's Hospital & Research Center in Oakland, police said.

Investigators found that the toddler's family was in their family room when the girl climbed onto a chair being used by her grandfather, police said. The girl then pushed the window screen and fell out the open window onto grass three stories down, according to police.

In light of the incident, safety officials ask that residents keep climbable furniture away from open windows, according to the Police Department.
