Two officers responded to 1143 E. Laurel Drive at about 3:45 a.m. on a disturbance call of a woman acting strangely, police reported.
Arriving officers located Maria Dela Torre in a minivan parked in the driveway and saw her stabbing herself in the neck with a small instrument, according to police.
The officers tried to talk to her and then positioned themselves to open one of the doors and subdue her, but she consistently maneuvered between the driver and front passenger seats, police reported.
She then opened the passenger-side door and allegedly lunged at one the officers with what they thought was an ice pick or knife, according to police.
One officer then used a Taser on Dela Torre while the second shot her twice with a pistol, police reported.
She was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police later learned that Dela Torre was holding a metallic crochet hook.
Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of an investigation.
