Around 8:45 p.m., three males in their late teens got into an argument with a 13-year-old boy in the 800 block of North 19th Street and began beating the boy with their fists and a wooden object, Officer Jermiane Thomas said.
The 16-year-old heard the younger boy screaming and stepped in to defend his friend, Thomas said.
The three suspects fled on foot but fired shots toward the two boys, hitting the 16-year-old once, he said.
Both victims were taken to a hospital and were listed in stable condition.
The suspects were gone when police arrived and no one has been arrested.
Police initially reported the incident as a drive-by shooting but Thomas said it was not.
