New telemarketing rules go into affect

New rules for those obnoxious prerecorded telemarketing calls, this is very good news for consumers. Starting Monday, those responsible for the calls must offer consumers the option to opt-out of future telephone calls.

Here are the rules: the consumer must be able to opt-out while the message is playing. The opt-out must be easy by pressing a single button or saying a single word. The opt-out must work even if the message has been recorded on voice mail. Once told of the opt-out, the phone call must end immediately, and the number placed on the organizations internal "Do Not Call" list.

This comes on top of the rule that says prerecorded telemarketing messages are only permitted when the caller has an established business relationship with the business calling.
