California's superintendent recognized three middle schools Tuesday, including one in the Bay Area, as schools to watch.

Superintendent Jack O'Connell says San Jose's Dartmouth Middle School stood out among others across the state for a big gain in API test scores over the past three years.

Hispanic and poor students especially saw major improvements.

Dartmouth will be formally recognized during the California League of Middle Schools conference in March.
