Police say bones found by a public works crew appear to be those of an American Indian child no more than 4 years old.

The bones were found Jan. 28 by a crew doing routine maintenance on a street in Alameda, a suburb of San Francisco. Officials at first thought they were not American Indian.

Police Lt. Bill Scott said Wednesday that the remains appear to be "archaeological in nature," according to the preliminary findings of a forensic anthropologist. The skull and other bones were analyzed at the Alameda County coroner's office.
