The award is given to a county resident who contributes to the VA Health Care System, volunteer support, patriotic holidays, support for military personnel, military events and other groups with veterans, according to county officials.

Residents who have lived in the county for at least three years, have served veterans for at least three years and are at least 18 years of age are eligible for the award, established in 1991.

Last year's winner, Mountain View resident Walter Dillard, helped patients at the VA Palo Alto Hospital, served as an honor guard for parades and ceremonies, and lead Bingo nights for veterans, according to the county.

Ken Kershaw, director of the Office of Veterans' Services, said the county receives between six and nine nominations annually. The award is important to acknowledge those who commit their time, he said.

"(The award is) for veterans and the community to know that there can be recognition for their service," he said. "A lot of times we sit there and we do things and nothing is ever recognized."

Applications for nominees are available online at www.sccgov.org or by calling (408) 553-6000. Completed applications can be faxed to (408) 553-6016 or mailed to Ken Kershaw, Director, Santa Clara County Office of Veterans Services, 68 North Winchester Blvd., Santa Clara, CA 95050.
