Over the past year there have been reports of outbreaks of salmonella or E. coli in foods ranging from spinach and beef to cookie dough and peanut butter.
On Tuesday, the Obama Administration ordered tough new rules to make the food supply safer.
"American families have enough to worry about these days just to put the food on the table, let alone whether the food is safe for their children and their husbands and wives to eat," said Vice President Joe Biden.
The rules will require more inspections and better systems to quickly trace the origins of outbreaks.
