It happened at around 8:00 p.m. near Lake Merritt, at an apartment complex on Foothill Boulevard between 4th and 5th Avenue.
At 11-year-old is undergoing surgery after he was shot in the face. According to police, the child was with another person when they found a shotgun near a garage at the apartment complex.
It is unclear how the shot gun was found, and police are trying to figure out if the shotgun was in storage, or if it was out in the open. They heard it could have been under a pile of debris.
What is certain is that the kids started playing with the firearm, which is believed to be an old single-barrel 20 gage shotgun used for bird hunting.
"The kids were just being kids and playing in the garage, and somehow they gained access to the weapon and we are still trying to determine where the weapon was, where the gun was at the time. Once they gained access to the gun, it fired and the child was hit," said Sgt. Daniel Kemmitt from Oakland Police Department.
The child was transported to Children's Hospital and his condition is unknown. He is undergoing surgery with gunshot wounds to his face.
Police are searching for the weapon's serial number and tracking down the owner and criminal charges are possible including negligent storage of a firearm.
