Hill threw one ball in practice and then shut it down with a strained lower back. So it's unclear what his status will be heading into Saturday's pre-season game in Dallas.

Hill said the injury was no big deal and head coach Mike Singletary said Hill could have pushed himself thru practice, if necessary, but there was no point in that.

Alex Smith won't play against Dallas, he sprained his thumb, making a tackle following on interception in the Raider's game and has been wearing a splint, which means rookie Nate Davis might get more playing time in Dallas.

Davis looked like the Niner's best quarterback against Oakland. He's raw, but has a strong arm and he's eager to do whatever it takes to help the team.

"I just come out here every day and keep on working hard. That's what I'm trying to do. If I'm the third man, then that's great, but I just want to do whatever's best for the team. If it comes down to practice squad, then I'll be on the practice squad giving the defense the best looks there is," said Nate Davis, 49er rookie quarterback.
