A small crowd gathered in San Francisco Monday at the Martin Luther King Jr. monument in Yerba Buena Gardens to remember the slain civil rights activist, one of many events that took place around the city.

Afterwards, there was a march to Civic Center, something that has become a tradition in San Francisco.

But the Martin Luther King Day was one for a new generation, as long time leaders of the local African American community called on younger members to step up and continue the celebrations.

"A new generation would come in and step up to the plate and continue the celebration to continue to recognize the importance of celebrating the day and coming together," Oakland resident Taryn Clark said.
