Permits now required for Half Dome summit hand cables

People planning on a weekend climb to the summit of Half Dome at Yosemite National Park will now need permits.

The National Park Service will start issuing the permits in March for hikers who want to pull themselves up the summit cables during weekends and holidays.

Four deaths in the past four years prompted park officials to begin issuing the permits.

On some weekends, more than 1,000 people have lined up to use the hand cables for the final 400-foot ascent to the Half Dome Summit.

Officials hope permits will help control the crowds
