UC Berkeley forges partnership with China
BERKELEY, CA
About 130 members from the top university in Beijing, China kicked off a budding relationship in berkeley, today.
The schools will collaborate on everything from global warming to technological developments and ethics.
The academics say the recent political climate is not restricting their exchange of information. In fact, they hope it strengthens the political relationship.
"Mutual relationships, mutual understanding that will ease the tension of misunderstanding," Guangzhi Xia, Department Director from Tsinghua University said.
"It's just like the Soviet Union. It started with started with science and collaborations and eventually became more open," UC Berkeley Professor George Smoot said.
Nobel Prize winner Smoot says the u-s will benefit because the tide of science and technology is shifting toward Asia.
Ching Hwa university is also developing relations with Stanford and several Ivy League schools.
